The ‘Play Station’ magazine is typically aimed at a male target audience. This is shown through the use of strong and dominant colors such as yellow and black throughout the page, for example, on the masthead, strapline, cover lines, headline, kicker, caption and web address, which helps the magazine as it then gives it a very masculine look. The font used on the magazine looks computerized and very robotic, which connotes the magazine will be regarding a form of technology, which in this case is a plays station console. The centralized image used is of a car as an extreme long shot, which clearly foreshadows what you will find and should expect in the magazine. The image also helps appeal to its target audience as, cars are something every man have an interest for. The use of such bold and eye catching colors, complement one another very well, giving it a hard and typically strong look, which will help appeal and attract its audience. The demographics of this magazine are A, B, C1 and C2. The reason for this is because you would have to own a play station in order to purchase the magazine, as it contains cheats to the games and more information on different games, this however limits its audience, as not every man would own a play station. The demographics does not always depend on the price of the magazine as in this case, those who are fit into the D and E demographics may not be able to own a play station therefore see no reason for buying this magazine. The psychographics of this magazine on the other hand are Free spirits and Aspirers, as both types like to keep up with the latest trends, in which this case is the latest technology or game consoles. With doing so they would fit in with the rest, therefore they choose to keep up with technology. By keeping up with technology, they would have to keep up with latest issues of the play station magazine as it helps them with there games, which is one of the main reasons for why this magazine would have a very high selling point.

What film genres are the most popular at present?
The most popular genres according to me today are; Comedy/Romance/Thriller and Sci–Fi.
Why do you think this is?
Sci-Fi – because technology has increased drastically and Sci-Fi films are now edited with a high standard where each scene seems realistic, also it shows potential on what could happen with improvements in science.
Thriller- because they excite the audience and have become very popular over the years, as the editing has improved making films more realistic allowing it to appeal to a wider range of audiences
Romance- this is popular as it relates to everyone. Love is something every human is bound to experience, whether it is through relationships such as; parental love, love for your spouse, civil partnerships, love for friends etc...
Comedy- because it is very entertaining, and allows everyone to get rid of their tension and stress whilst enjoying a comedy.
What genres do you think were popular back in the 1930’s and 1940’s?
Horror and Comedy. - The reason for this is because slapsticks were very popular back then, and therefore lead audiences enjoying films based on comedy. However horror films may have been popular as every human is bound to be scared of something, and horror is a genre which again excites its audience and grips their attention.

Contrasting magazine covers. (Ms.Holliday)
Both magazine covers relate to one topic, fitness. One is mainly targeted at women and the other at men.
‘Oxygen’ the women’s fitness magazine clearly appeals to its intended audience who are women. However the audience demographics are of a variety, as it appeals to A,B,C1,C2 and D. This is because today, everyone’s out to look good and maintain a healthy body. Therefore this magazine would appeal to a wide range of women regardless their occupation. The main audience types this magazine relates to are Free spirits and Aspirers, as both types like to keep up with trends and show concern regarding their appearance. On the other hand, the use of a centralized image, of a lady in a medium long shot with an ideal figure also connotes that the magazine is for a specific gender. The image compels other women to get their figure as to what is shown on the cover. The posture also helps attract its targeted audience as she gives off a ‘sexy, slim and trim’ look, which then makes the readers want to look like her. Furthermore, the emphasis on the strapline ‘Blast away fat’ grabs women’s attention instantly, as all women tend to worry about their figure. The simplicity of colors that are used come across as very neutral yet allows the magazine to stand out. In addition, there are many techniques used to grab the intended audience’s attention, such as emphasis on certain words and the use of numbers i.e. ‘thighs’ which also helps grab women’s attention, ’20 30 & 40’ etc. The mentioning of age, certainly helps attract women to read the magazine as everyone today makes an extra effort trying to look younger. However brightening certain words such as ‘thighs’ also helps attract women as readers , because they do not only want get rid of fat from their stomach or arms but also lose fat from their thighs, as a result of contemporary clothing trends, such as being able to fit into slim wear and skinny jeans etc. Moving on, the magazine has many selling points such as the use of no adverts, as it shows the magazine is strictly committed to what its purpose is as the cover shows simplicity, the most quick and easy ways to lose weight with only relevant information on the front cover.
‘Men’s workout‘ is typically aimed at men as their target audience. The demographic audience of this magazine are B,C1 and C2. The reason for this is that men aren’t so conscious about their body in comparison to women, therefore have a smaller variety of demographic audiences. The different types of audiences this magazine relates to are the same as ‘Oxygen’, Free spirits and Aspirers. Free spirits are most vulnerable and are easy to attract to such magazines as they’d do anything to stand out and get the girls on their side. However the bold masthead connotes its intended audience, by the use of the word ‘Men’s’ implying it is for a specific gender. The magazine uses a centralized image of a good looking and rather muscular man in a medium long shot, helping attract its audience as every man/boy within the specific audience type wants a nice shaped body like his. On the other hand the use of bright, strong and bold colors helps attract the audience’s eye, yet the colours also gives out a tough and typical manly looking magazine look. The use of background colors such as black and the typical bright blue also helps the magazine come across as a typical boyish magazine. The man’s posture connotes he is a ladies man as a result of his good looks, very dominant, tough and handsome which again is something every man would want to come across as, therefore it will compel other men to read it. The use of a kicker on the bottom left and straplines on the left allows the reader to have more of a clear insight to what they should expect in the magazine unlike ‘Oxygen’. This image has very stereotypically been chosen as a front cover as it almost comes across as, if you read this magazine you will end up looking like the bloke on the front page. This is also a reason for why the image takes up most of the space, and the same applies for ‘Oxygen’.

ASA ad ban.
The picture above is of a car which has been wrecked outrageously, the positioning of the wheel on the very left hand side of the image which is lit up, connotes that a major accident had taken place. The wordings at the top however “inner peace through outer violence” comes across as a very stereotypical and generalised statement. It would undoubtedly give out the wrong message. Especially to those of a young age, eager to drive. It implies that you get peace choosing the oath of violence. Which can have major impacts on my lives, therefore may have been banned. The image itself comes across ad very brutal and could be seen as disturbing not only to young audiences but also to those that have past experiences with accidents, which may also be a reason for why this image was banned. I also feel that this image is too explicit and connotes death and blood which will definitely have the wrong impact on the younger audience.
“Meat kills” is a sweeping statement that would create major impacts on those that eat meat. It would immediately create doubt in their mind, on whether eating meat really causes swine flu and death. “Go vegetarian” this is ordering you to do so. And not informing you. It comes across almost as if it is a major warning. However as this an untrue statement the media had banned this poster from being publicised. This is a generalisation according to me and should definitely not be publicises, especially because it has a huge audience share, and the facts that are stated on the poster are not proven correct.
The 2 images above have been banned due to their “glorying of guns” implying that it is too violent and the use of a gun is demonstrated as a casual act. It influences the audience and again created the wrong impact. Also another reason for why it has been banned it because of the wait the gun is constructed. It gives out the message, that you are not safe without carrying a gun, therefore persuades the audience to choose the wrong and illegal path, and carry guns. This to me is a ridiculous reason for the poster to be banned. The youth of today are very clever and are aware of such things being illegal through the media and primary socialisation at home, therefore it should have not been ban.

Poster analysis (Miss. Holliday)
This image above is promoting Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The lighting of this image is very bright and can be considered as an under light as it is focused around Snow Whites face and the blood red apple however the image also uses high key lighting from the top half of the image which then gradually becomes dull in the bottom left corner. This connotes that an event will take place involving the evil looking witch that may well cast evil upon Snow White through the apple. The dwarfs look very happy and are dressed in bright colours that connote, all of them put together may well be Snow Whites saviours. The use of bright colours foreshadow that the film will be full of joy and a typical fairy tale.
The composition of Snow White is centralised and much larger in size where as in comparison to the other characters, they are much smaller in size and only use a small area of the image implying the story will be based around Snow White. On the other hand the composition of the seven dwarfs at the bottom right of the page almost show as if they look up to Snow White as someone they love. However where the witch stands in the bottom left connotes evil, as she is distanced apart from both Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The witch also stands beneath the deep red apple which show the witch and apple are representations of evil.
There is no particular setting for this image as the sparkles denote it is taking place in a dream or fairy tale wonder land which also connote the themes of the film which are, love, magic, evil and deception. The reason for why the themes are as such, is because the image is set out as if it is telling the story, which then compels the audience to go and watch the film as they would want to know what exactly happens. Moving on, the image also sets the genre of Romance, suspense, mystery and fairy tale through the use of colours, positioning of characters, lighting, facial expressions etc...
Snow White poses staring at the apple, as if there has been a spell cast upon her and is tempted to bite into it. This demonstrates what will cause the unfortunate event and connotes evil.
The mise-en-scene is as if it were a point of view shot (p.o.v) where we as the audience are looking directly at Snow White. Looking at the image, it implies the audience of this film are youngsters around the age of 5-17.
Overall i would see this image as a highly effective media piece, as it is able to connote clear messages with the use of so little text...

Womens Weekly - Ms. Van Der Sanden
Women’s Weekly
Women’s weekly is targeted mainly at women. This is shown through the name itself and the use of images on the web page. The images on the page and use of colours all connote that the targeted audience are women. The website uses the magazine as a guide for recipes implying that it is targeted at an elderly and more mature age group of women. The site mainly comes across as a learning curve in order for women to learn new things and to express their responsibilities of being a women. Women’s weekly also has different sub-contents within the magazine and webpage for example: Fashion: The best cosy cardigans from the high street, Real life: Living with Alzheimer's, Three ways to ease the pain of varicose veins, Brighten your garden with pretty pansies and Travel: Glorious mansions and gardens of Washington and Virginia. However there is a major difference between the website and the magazine itself. The magazine has a page and a half regarding cooking where as the webpage uses the magazine as an example of how, where and what to find in the magazine itself.
